He has directed PICNIC by William Inge, ISN'T IT ROMANTIC by Wendy Wasserstein, OKLAHOMA!, JOSEPH AND THE AMAZING TECHNICOLOR DREAMCOAT, and THE MIKADO.Mr. Silverstein served his apprenticeship on the staff at Lyric Opera of Chicago, and Houston Grand Opera. During this time he assisted such directors as David Freeman, Jean Pierre Ponnelle, Peter Hall, Ken Russell, Harold Prince and Robert Wilson. Harry Silverstein has developed a reputation as one of opera's most successful interpreters of Mozart. His productions include the Mozart bicentenary DON GIOVANNI for Houston Grand Opera with Thomas Allen, Rene Flemming and Karita Mattila's first Anna. The production was revived four years later with Bo Skovus and again with Mariusz Kwiecien. Also at Houston, NOZZE DI FIGARO with Patrick Summers, Oren Gradus, Isabel Bayrakdarian, Teddy Tahu Rhodes, and Ana Maria Martinez, and again with James Gaffigan and Luca Pisaroni’s debut as the Count Adriana Kucerova debut as Susannah and COSI FAN TUTTE with Nathan Gunn, Richard Croft, Christine Goerke and Joyce DiDonato. At Dallas opera he staged COSI FAN TUTTE and DON GIOVANNI conducted by Graeme Jenkins first with Sergi Leiferkus and then later with Rodney Gilfry. Other Mozart productions include IDOMENEO for Opera Northern Ireland, a staged concert version of COSI with Christof Eschenbach, Carol Vanness and Suzanne Mentzer, and FIGARO with Daniel Barenboim, Dorthea Roschmann and Rebecca Evans and Die Entfuhrung aus dem Serail and Cosi Fan Tutte with James Conlon at Ravinia Festival. Other Mozart productions include FIGARO for Washington National Opera, COSI for Utah Opera, FIGARO for Opera Pacific, DON GIOVANNI for Wolf Trap Opera and Chautauqua Opera, and FIGARO, COSI, GIOVANNI, IDOMENEO, and FLUTE for DePaul Opera Theatre.Mr. Silverstein lives in Evanston, Illinois, with his wife Jo Beth, and has two children son Daniel and daughter Elizabeth.
